Exploring the Art of Dry Stone Construction: A Ten-Day Experiential Workshop in Tinos
From October 31 to November 9, 2025, a unique workshop dedicated to the art of dry stone construction took place in Tinos, with the support of Hellenic Youth Participation, within the framework of the Erasmus+ project “The European Crossroads of Dry Stone Landscapes.”
The initiative was part of a broader European collaboration involving organizations from Spain, Croatia, France, and Greece, aiming to highlight, preserve, and transmit knowledge related to dry stone construction as an element of intangible cultural heritage and sustainable landscape management.
The Greek workshop was organized by the Mediterranean Centre of Environment – Greece and the Social Cooperative Enterprise “To Mpatiki”, and was hosted in Tinos, an island with a long-standing tradition in dry stone building. The program consisted of three thematic modules, combining theoretical input with hands-on practice. Participants had the opportunity to attend all three modules or to select two of them, depending on their interests and availability.
Through experiential activities, knowledge exchange, and collaboration with experts and practitioners in the field, participants engaged with the techniques, history, and significance of dry stone construction, recognizing it as a practice that connects culture, the environment, and sustainability.
The workshop highlighted the importance of safeguarding traditional knowledge and strengthening European cooperation, actively contributing to connecting young people with cultural heritage and contemporary challenges related to sustainable development.
