GendEUr Politics
GendEUr Politics was implemented from 27.06.22 to 01.07.22 in Granada, Spain.
With this project we want to know the situation of women and the direct actions that are being carried out in different countries. Since gender inequality is a structural problem, we can do an exercise in self-knowledge to share our opinions and our experiences. We will focus on different current phenomena that obstruct the participation of women in political life like salary gap, glass ceiling or maternity leave.
The main topics of GendEUr Politics are:
- Create spaces for dialogue and interaction between young people and decision makers.
- Know the situation of women in our country and in the neighbors.
- Develop proposals that promote the empowerment and democratic participation of young people.
"Hello! I am Dimitra, writing about my experience in “GendEUr politics”, an E+ training course I took part in, from the 27th of June until the 1st of July, in Pinos Genil; a village near Granada. The training course was about gender (in)equality and women’s status in societies. Throughout the duration of the TC, we explored a plethora of phenomena that we recognized to obstruct the participation of women in various spheres of life, discussing, among others, about gender roles, workplace discrimination, the pay gap, education status, women in places of power, reproductive rights, abortion, sex work, gender-based violence, revenge porn, femicides, etc.
The most exciting part was that I got to discuss around such issues with peers from different countries, and thus got to know about the situation of women and the actions that are being taken around women’s rights in Spain, Ukraine and Poland. We all felt safe to share our experiences and opinions with each other, no matter how different or opposed they might have been in certain debatable topics; that was the beautiful part of such a healthy international dialogue. We all had the chance to collectively (and individually) reflect on the role of women in society, and in public and private life, bringing diverse perspectives on the table. After discussing around these issues, we had to come up with possible actions that could be taken to tackle gender inequalities and develop proposals that promote the participation and empowerment of women. Even though I recognized how difficult it is to practically defy and subvert established societal norms, seeing the different statuses of women in different parts of the world, I grew to realize even more firmly than before, that gender roles are actually socially constructed, which means society (us!) could just as well change them! Even in cases that that still seems impossible, at the very least we were inspired to evaluate our own sociocultural inscriptions as regards gender roles and stereotypes, thus raising our awareness about the importance of gender equity in the different spheres of life. Phenomena like sexism and discrimination due to one’s gender are sadly met in every part of the world, and the least we can do as young, open-minded people is work towards the development of a fair society that promotes gender equity." "Although it was my first experience in a youth exchange training program, I couldn't have imagined it better. The program took place in Spain in the picturesque village of Pinos Genil near Granada and focused on gender inequality. We were given the opportunity to learn about the issue of gender inequality and the position of women in different countries (Poland, Spain, Ukraine) and to exchange views in order to find solutions. What impressed me is how quickly we bonded as a team and created a safe environment for us to open up, talk and even confront each other. In just 5 days I met people from different countries with different experiences and made friendships that I believe will last. Finally, by participating in the program I came into contact with Spanish culture and was lucky enough to explore Granada. I would definitely recommend participating in similar programs." Aliki.
"Through the GendEUr Politics program I had the opportunity to interact with people from different countries and gain a better insight into how gender equality is represented in their country as well as create my own action plan/proposal related to the topic. In addition to the educational part, we had the opportunity to get in touch with nature in a beautiful village in Spain. Although the program was of short duration, the connection with the rest of the team members was made from the very first day and we still keep in touch with several of the people, slowly creating a network throughout Europe. "The GendEUr Politicts training course, even after its end, remains a special experience, from which I draw inspiration for the future. It was the most suitable and safest framework to discuss the situation of the gender issue, both in my country and in other European countries, through the exchange of experiences, data and practices. Non-formal learning is an important enabler and I am grateful to have known it, because it gives me hope that society can indeed change. I met young people with similar ideas and concerns for a more inclusive society. The most important thing, however, was that everyone had the opportunity to be heard and express suggestions, giving their mark. Within a week, friendships were formed and an impetus was given to implement our proposals, in the local community and within the framework of erasmus+ !!" Flora.
